A tally chart is a table used to record values for a variable in a data set, by hand, often as the values are collected. One tally mark is used for each occurrence of a value. Tally marks are usually grouped in sets of five, to aid the counting of the frequent for each value. One vertical line is made for each of the first four numbers, while the fifth number is represented by a diagonal line across the previous four.
